Captain Thomas Hunt captures 20 Patuxets and 7 Nausets, selling them as slaves to Spain. Captain Hunt's expedition brings the plague, destroying the Pawtuxet. An estimated 72,000 to 90,000 people lived in southern New England before contact with Europeans.
